Today's my topic is "The Secret to Supermarket Product Placement"
Supermarket product placement is a game within itself. What seems like a harmless trip to the grocery store actually turns into a labyrinth of fresh produce, toiletries, and other necessary goods. This can lead the consumer to buy things they didn’t necessarily come to the store for, and your product could be one of those things. Understanding how supermarkets layouts work will be another tool in your arsenal when negotiating with retailers on how and where to place your product.
When customer walk into a supermarket, he or she probably want to spend as little money as possible. The supermarket wants customer to spend as much money as possible. Let battle commence.
As customer enter the store his /her senses come under assault. customer will often find that fresh produce (fruit, vegetables, flowers) is the first thing they see. The vibrant colours put them in a good mood, and the happier customer are the more they are likely to spend.
Customer sense of smell is also targeted. Freshly baked bread or roasting chickens reinforce how fresh the produce is and makes customer feel hungry. They might even buy a chicken “to save them the bother of cooking one themself”. Even customer sense of hearing may come under attack. Music with a slow rhythm tends to make them move slower, meaning customer spend more time in the store.
Product placement
There are marketing strategies which you may not be aware of that also influence customer buying habits. Have you ever considered how supermarkets decide where to place items on the shelves and, more importantly, why they place them where they do?
When you see items on a supermarket shelf, you are looking at a planogram. A planogram is defined as a “diagram or model that indicates the placement of retail products on shelves in order to maximise sales”.
Now I will explain you The Secret Bullets points to Supermarket Product Placement.
1) Basket --------------Why supermarket should give basket to customer while entering Supermarket?
When any customer enter supermarket, if he or she takes basket then its sure shot, he/she will buy more than one product. Its human physiology that if someone has basket & he or she will buy more products because of feeling shame of buying or keeping one product in basket.
2) Why supermarket should keep biscuits, muffins, chocolates in lowest selves?
Children can easily access & can pick the product by own without parents help & can put them in basket.
3) Why supermarket keeps most needy products (e.g.; flour, Rice, Sugar, salt, spices etc) in last section?
Customer will pass through all section to reach last section & while passing through, customer eye will move on all unnecessary & attractive products which will tempt customer to buy.
4) Why supermarket should not keep main door or window open or watch on wall?
Because customer should not feel that by any chance, he or she is spending valuable time in supermarket.
5) Why Supermarket should keep Different Category Products together?
You might think that designing a good planogram is about putting similar goods together, cereals, toiletries, baking goods and so on. However, supermarkets have found it makes sense to place some goods together even though they are not in the same category. Beer and crisps is an obvious example. If you are buying beer, crisps seem like a good idea, and convenience makes a purchase more likely. You may also find that they are the high-quality brands, but “that’s okay, why not treat ourselves?”
This idea of placing complementary goods together is a difficult problem. Beer and crisps might seem an easy choice, but this could influence the overall sales of crisps, especially if the space given to crisps in other parts of the store is reduced. And what do you do with peanuts, have them near the beer as well?
Now that you know more about how supermarket product placement works; I hope you can do to improve your in-store performance 2021.
